State with financial muscle

For most visitors - especially those landing at Frankfurt International airport - Hessen is often their first taste of Germany. As the wealthiest state in Germany it combines the glitz-and-glamour of city living against a backdrop of picturesque forested landscapes, winding rivers and ancient Roman Spa Towns.

Outside of its financial muscle the sectoral structure of Hessen is mixed. The areas around Frankfurt are characterised by chemical and pharmaceutical industries, mechanical engineering and automotive sectors. Equally the Frankfurt Main airport and the aviation industry play an equally important role.

Heritage

In the more laidback south, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden are unmissable for fans of the rolling countryside and are a great base for visiting a brace of UNESCO World Heritage sites; making them the perfect antidotes to Frankfurt’s urban stress.

Big-city buzz

If it’s big-city buzz that you are after, then look no further than Frankfurt. The country’s fifth largest city- and the financial capital of the Eurozone - has much to offer, from its heavyweight museums and iconic landmarks, to its world class shopping districts and vibrant night life.
